Abstract
The performance of printed radiating elements in large phased array antenna systems is limited by the effects of mutual coupling between the elements that vary with scan direction. This mutual coupling is controlled by the interaction of the phase taper imposed to create the desired beam steering, the thickness and properties of the dielectric substrate, and the element cell geometry and spacing. The performance of the element can vary widely as a function of beam steering angle. The analysis of array radiating elements printed on layered dielectric substrates has been investigated for several specific element geometries. This paper addresses the analysis of arbitrarily shaped radiating elements printed on layered dielectric substrates including the theory and validation of a software analysis tool, Analysis Software for Infinite Arrays (ASIA), developed for this task. The performance of two more complicated radiating elements in large/infinite arrays is examined using this analysis tool.
