Abstract :
The authors review the functions of directional couplers with variable spacing, and examine the performance of these couplers for phase mismatch induced by the photorefractive effect. The photorefractive damage of Ti:LiNbO3 directional couplers with variable spacing has been investigated. Using a theoretical model based on the weak coupled wave equations with the effective index method to analyze the coupling characteristics of these devices, it is shown that no explicit degradation in performance is obtained for devices exposed at lower intensity
