Abstract :
The performance of multigigabit-per-second and multichannel AM-VSB (vestigial sideband) subcarrier multiplexed lightwave systems utilizing semiconductor optical amplifiers is evaluated using computer simulation techniques. For multigigabit-per-second systems, the NRZ/RZ system penalty due to optical amplifier gain saturation is evaluated. For subcarrier multiplexed systems, the carrier-to-second-order intermodulation and the carrier-to-third-order intermodulation are evaluated as functions of the amplifier output power. The simulation results are in good agreement with experimental measurements
