The new frontier in technology and the expansion of telecommunications in the Mediterranean area

The community of Mediterranean countries should enhance its communication infrastructure which means its telecommunication system. The integrated use of technological advances on satellites and optical submarine cable systems could extend the availability of traditional services and provide the network capabilities required to accommodate new ones, including multimedia. This paper provides an overview of the technological progress expected in the fields of optical fiber submarine cables and telecommunications satellites, with special emphasis on applications within the Mediterranean Basin
