  • Abstract
The necessity of turning their attention away from the military sector towards commercial products has caused many companies to look into automotive applications. Automotive radar sensors-simple collision warning devices at 24 GHz or intelligent cruise control sensors at 77 GHz-besides 38 GHz PCNs, have the largest market potential of all currently known millimeterwave applications for the very near future. For various control task is in a vehicle, the velocity has to be determined; Doppler radar sensors operating at 24 or 61 GHz are being used successfully. However, such stand alone units are only the beginning. Traffic flow monitoring and control, and the ultimate goal of cooperative driving needs the implementation of some means of vehicle-to-roadside as well as vehicle-to-vehicle communication. It is only today, that the demand pull has taken over from the usual technology push. Passenger-comfort and traffic-safety is the design goal for the future, in order to provide competitive advantages for car manufacturers a present and also within the next century
