  • Abstract
The authors describe a 10-GHz bandwidth amplifier IC and mixer IC fabricated in silicon bipolar technology, intended for use in multi-Gb/s coherent optical-fiber communication systems, for example, the continuous-phase frequency shift keying (CPFSK) heterodyne receiver. These 10-GHz silicon bipolar ICs are achieved by repeated simulations with an accurate high-frequency model of interconnect lines, and by using 30-GHz f/sub t/ transistors. The functional blocks of the coherent optical heterodyne receiver are shown. The IF (intermediate frequency) amplifier is used for sufficient signal level for the demodulator input. The mixer consists of the differential detector. To achieve the multi-Gb/s rate requires an IF amp with 20-dB gain, 10-GHz bandwidth, and flat frequency response. 10-GHz bandwidth for both mixer inputs is required.<>
