Abstract
It is suggested that a radically more sophisticated generation of customers will be supported by the considerable power of ISDN (integrated services digital network), permitting rapid changes to be made in customer services and networks. An equally sophisticated maintenance approach is required. Although service providers such as the local exchange carriers, have many resources available to them, an integrated use of these resources is essential. The authors identify automated maintenance functions necessary for the support of the ISDN network, and provides a functional process flow for the handling of ISDN troubles. The process flow integrates testing (both service-interruptive as well as digital noninterruptive) and continuous performance monitoring capabilities, along with real-time customer service profile tracking
