Abstract
An active telecommunication system is described that uses a laser beam transmitted through the air. A beam control system is proposed for switching optical links or tracking mobile terminals. Two types of laser transmission system are newly designed, and experiments prove that an active FSO system enables broadband communication at 1 Gbit/s with a low bit error rate of 10-11, and can successfully switch optical links in as little as 20 ms
