Abstract :
The Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) is a concept for a third generation mobile telecommunications system. It is to be a system for a wide range of mobile services provided in different service environments, thereby supporting many mobile telecommunications applications. The UMTS is studied in the RACE programme. The paper focuses on the network aspects of the UMTS. Particularly, the UMTS concept, user requirements, an outline of the network, a functional architecture and a protocol framework are described
