Abstract
The phenomena of acoustical pressure oscillations generated in a gas by a steady heat source may be separated into two distinct types: (i) Sondhauss oscillations which occur in a pipe having one end closed and one open; (ii) and Rijke oscillations which occur in a pipe having both ends open, after reviewing some papers of the available literature on Sondhauss and Rijke oscillations, analogies and differences among these systems and others which are apparently similar are considered from a thermodynamic point of view. In addition, some actual and possible applications are dealt with
