Abstract
Wireless access has a place in the emerging telecommunication networks of developing countries. Unlike developed countries, where wireless will improve the portability and convenience of a basic service, wireless access is a potentially powerful technology for developing countries, enabling rapid and cost effective deployment of basic service. The paper addresses the technical requirements and cost targets needed to release this substantial market. The essential ingredient is a dramatic, order of magnitude cost improvement over conventional technology. Although rural is emphasized, the figures and concepts embrace both urban and rural landscapes
