Abstract
One of the most prominent problems faced by the cooperation among distributed information systems is the problem of heterogeneity that is often not easy to deal with. However the few suggested approaches have proposed complex multilevel architectures that are difficult to develop and usually homogeneous. Furthermore the information technology that is used to permit agents to communicate with each other is not portable while heterogeneous distributed sources of information are becoming available on the Internet. Along with motivating the importance of such systems, the paper shows an approach which views cooperative information systems as a community of cooperating autonomous agents and describes a novel architecture providing a balance between the heterogeneity of information systems and the homogeneity provided by agents
