Abstract :
Many HF (high frequency) communication systems have been developed which automatically select operating frequency, route calls, correct transmission errors and log activity. Often these systems do not meet the reasonable expectations of the user because the antenna systems are deficient. The author discusses the special requirements of automatic HF systems, the deficiencies of commonly used antenna systems and alternative designs which employ automatic antenna tuners to satisfy all of the essential requirements for communication at ranges less than 1000 km
