Abstract :
The authors discuss a method of increasing the reliability of the synchronous triggering system for induction cell, pulse power modulators using a laser, optical fibers, and back lighted thyratrons (BLTs). Using this approach, an improved induction accelerator control system can be realized with the advantages of low jitter, improved fault capability, improved redundancy and reliability, and reduced weight and volume. The initial method discussed was proposed for use in the low pulse rate, Los Alamos National Laboratory flash X-ray accelerator system. The advantages of using an optically coupled triggering and/or timing system based on the BLT switch are examined. In addition, methods of implementing this approach and the requirements for critical components are described
