This paper reviews the major RBMK nuclear power plant modifications completed by the Russians shortly after the Chernobyl accident in 1986, looks at the major design safety aspects of each of the WWER series of reactors and presents views on the current status and issues associated with the aid programmes to the former Soviet Union and Central and Eastern Europe
