Abstract
By addition of a snubber magnetic assist and a by-pass diode the anode dissipation of the thyratron in a CVL modulator has been reduced from 5.6 kW to 560 W. It is argued that the origin of the excessive 5 kW is de-ionization loss. `Radar experience´ indicates that long life is expected from such a circuit, even for a small inexpensive thyratron. It is shown that RMS current by itself cannot be used as a figure of merit for modulator circuits. Finally, it is noted that there is no advantage in using hollow anode thyratrons for CVL modulators
