Abstract :
The performance of two commercial-grade back-lighted thyratron (BLT) switches has been evaluated by the US Naval Surface Warfare Center´s Pulsed Power Technology Branch. The switches, models F271-1 and F286-101, were fabricated using mostly standard thyratron parts and standard low pressure tube manufacturing techniques. The authors present the two switches, the test procedures used to evaluate them, and the results obtained thus far. It is shown that DC holdoff does not increase linearly as identical stages are added to a BLT. If the holes in the electrodes of the multistage switch were not aligned, as they are in the F286-101, holdoff might be improved
