Abstract
The traffic characteristics of an ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) network are analyzed with theoretical methods. Statistical multiplexing and statistical bandwidth allocation are evaluated quantitatively. When packetized video and voice traffic are to be multiplexed, the number of multiplexable sources greatly depends on the peak bit rate of multiplexed video sources, and statistical bandwidth allocation is not effective without control. On the other hand, lowering the peak bit rate of video traffic is effective in improving bandwidth utilization
