Abstract
This paper describes recent results of the MedFasee-Eletrosul project aiming at the development and performance testing of a Wide Area Measurement System (WAMS) prototype and its applications for monitoring of power system operation. The prototype consists of a Phasor Data Concentrator (PDC) and four Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) installed in the Eletrosul transmission system. The PMU, the PDC and the communication system are described as well as the main requirements and operational capability. The installation characteristics and the prototype performance are described. Applications for power flow and transmission line parameters calculations, frequency, phase angle and voltage monitoring and identification of eletromechanical oscillation modes, are presented.
