Abstract :
In this paper, we present a project oriented teaching and learning scheme that facilitates the students´ capabilities of understanding, analyzing and solving the pattern recognition problems. In this scheme, a neural networks based face recognition project is developed for the educational purposes. The project consists of two components: a demonstration project which introduces the fundamental concepts of data preprocessing, feature extraction, neural network training and testing to the students; and a part of potential discussions for the lecture instructors to guide their students to conduct an in-depth study in the project. Upon successful participation and completion of the project, students will be able to apply the neural network principles in the potential pattern recognition applications.
