Abstract :
In monostatic radar systems, in which the same directive antenna is used for both transmission and reception, the angular resolution is limited by the restricted aperture width of the antenna. It is shown that, for a given aperture width, angular resolution can be maximized by employing linear optimum estimation (LOE). Specific aperture illuminations are proposed, by which the SNR degradation encountered when using LOE is kept low. These illuminations lead to an angular spread of the radiation pattern, which is analogous to spectrum spreading in spread spectrum communications
