Abstract :
Electrical conduction current in polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) polymer films of 50 μm and 130 μm thickness was studied under steady-state conditions at 40-200°C and at electric field strengths up to 246 kV cm-1 for 3-3600 s. The measured conduction currents in PTFE at various constant electrical field strengths and temperatures are examined in the light of Schottky, Poole-Frenkel, and ionic conduction mechanisms. The results are interpreted with reference to a space-charge effect with ionic conduction up to glass transition temperature of 120°C and an electric field strength up to 246 kV cm -1. Above 120°C and at an electric field strength above 100 kV cm-1, the results indicated electronic conduction. The current varied with voltage according to exp (αE)1/2 (E=electric field, α=constant), giving an activation energy (independent of the sample thickness) of about 0.3 eV
