Abstract
We investigate the dimensioning problems for the placement of regenerators in an optical transport network to provide signal-quality guaranteed connections. When an optical signal traverses through a network it undergoes signal degradation due to accumulated noise, dispersion and crosstalk. By optimally placing the regenerators in the optical network and defining domains of transparency, we can provide for signal-quality guaranteed connections. We develop intelligent dynamic routing algorithms to route the signals, considering the above mentioned aspect by taking bit error rate (BER). This is used as the signal quality constraint which is checked when routing a particular connection. By studying the performance of the network and signal quality, we develop intelligent algorithms to use the regenerators in an efficient manner and hence reduce the number of calls being blocked due to high BER, effectively reducing the net blocking probability.
