  • Abstract
The author has shown previously that a monochannel develops in transformer oil at the positive voltage pulse tail with an amplitude corresponding to the low gap breakdown probability (about 1-10%). A new method for investigating the impulse discharge mechanism, based on this phenomenon, is proposed. Three stages of discharge development are identified: discharge initiation and discharge zone formation; a stage of separation, movement and flashover of the gap by a monochannel; and monochannel transformation and complete breakdown. The characteristics of discharge development at these different stages are discussed
