Abstract :
Summary form only given. The fundamental engine of the passive optical network (PON) is the optical transceiver based on a Fabry-Perot laser and burst mode p-i-n diode receiver. The primary requirement on this device is very low cost, around $100; certainly less than $100 for fiber-to-the-home. Technical requirements can be derived from the systems requirements and these will be presented.
