Abstract :
By examining the behaviour of the ordinary differential equations of Ljung, some limitations of the self-tuning approach to adaptive control are shown. Specifically, while one may obtain "self-tuning" to the optimal controller in the case of a minimum variance cost criterion, this need not happen when the underlying cost criterion is anything else, e.g. a quadratic cost criterion also featuring a penalty on the control.
