Abstract :
The status of a octagon building on Xiamen Gulangyu island is described in this paper. The existing problems and reasons on its architecture and structure are pointed out, including its foundation, brick wall, brick column, concrete floor, and concrete beams etc. The analysis of earthquake-resistant ability shows that the whole building can´t satisfy the new standard for seismic appraisal of buildings. It needs to be repaired and strengthened in the appropriate design method. A new seismic strengthening plan is proposed to make full use of the original components and consolidate them in order to enhance their strength without changing the profile of the building. The structure seismic calculation demonstrates that the strengthened building is safe and stability under the new Code for seismic design of the building.
