Abstract :
A new approach to visual feedback devices has been developed by the RNID: use of speech measurement circuitry attached to a popular microcomputer. The speech problems of deaf children are described, with a review of work on visual aids. Design options are discussed, and the approach chosen is shown to have advantages of cost, generality, and user convenience which have led to the rapid acceptance of this system within the UK. Characteristics of the pitch/energy display are described, as well as a spectrum display, hearing aid tester, and audiometer, all organised as attachments to the microcomputer. The potential for other educational uses of the system are outlined.
