Abstract :
This paper describes the development of front terminal pure lead VRLA batteries for telecommunication applications. The SBSTM front terminal range has been designed to fit the standard 19" racking used in Europe typically offering significant space savings for users. The products can be used in most orientations and include single venting manifolds that allow easy removal of gases. The electrochemistry is based on the existing SBSTM product range that is used extensively in many applications. The success of the product in float applications has been substantiated with real time data that is demonstrated here. The product range is capable of float cyclic performance with a fast recharge capability without the need to increase the charge voltage. The rate of self-discharge is extremely low and the batteries can operate in a wide temperature window. In conclusion, the SBSTM front terminal range is a high energy and high power density family of products designed for growing telecommunication applications
