Abstract
This paper approaches the implementation of an advanced intelligent control scheme. The author regards this scheme as a hierarchical hybrid architecture which integrates different soft computing paradigms with advanced conventional control methodologies within an expert system structure. The author shows that this new scheme is resonant with the last developments in the field (briefly stated in the first section of the paper) by interpreting it in terms of the previously proposed control pyramid hierarchical structure for intelligent control. The particular techniques used to implement each hierarchical control level are presented by envisaging the integration of all the levels within a unified computational frame as a basis for the coordination of all the involved activities through the flow of a homogeneous information representation. Future work concerned with the application of this concept to the longitudinal motion control of automobiles, exploited to investigate the potentialities offered by this approach for the architectural design of autonomous guided vehicles, concludes the paper
