Abstract :
A computer simulation of the power system in a water pumping facility is examined. The simulations are performed to study the effects on power quality and the system problems that may result from introducing a large Adjustable Speed Drive (ASD) into the facility. Potential simulation programs are examined, and the Alternate Transients Program (ATP) version of the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) is found to be the tool of choice. The utility of various models with ATP for system elements are examined, and good results are obtained using a model derived from limited nameplate data. Various possible system operating conditions are simulated, and the results indicate a potential serious system resonance condition with the ASD installed, which requires consideration during the design and installation of the ASD
