  • Abstract
Telecommunications systems today are reaching very high levels of complexity. In this environment, power supply systems have to ensure the maximum reliability. Storage systems have always been a key point to reliable service. However, changes in telecommunications technology and budgeting are rapidly modifying the way we design and dimension storage systems. In this article we point out the state of the art of both the telecommunications technology and storage technology; how they meet to maximise performance and minimise costs; what the present consistence of storage systems for Telecom Italia plants is and what the performance in the field is. Finally we discuss the future trend in power systems design and how this impacts the storage systems. The storage systems discussed are vented and valve regulated lead-acid batteries
