Abstract :
In order to develop a basic understanding of the interaction of an ultra-wideband transient electromagnetic plane wave with a conducting cylindrical body such as a missile, the near field effects due to the basic physical features of the scatterer must be studied. A simplified missile structure with no appendages such as fins or antennas is considered. The simplified missile structure consists of a straight cylinder which is closed on one end with a flat endcap and linearly tapered to a circular aperture over a portion of the opposite end. Of particular interest is the axial electric field at the center of the aperture. The axial aperture electric fields of four distinct models are studied in order to isolate the effects of the separate physical features on the axial aperture electric field
