  • Abstract
Common In-Situ Sensors acquire information about the dynamic sea surface punctual but continuously in time with high precision. Satellite based remote sensing instruments enable the area-wide but sporadic inspection of the sea surface. Land- or ship based radar sensors allow both high spatial and temporal coverage. In combination with in-situ sensors the dopplerized radar constitute a high-capacity oceanographic monitoring system especially in inhomogeneous coastal areas. In deep waters inhomogeneities may be induced by turbulence, i.e. eddies or diffraction of surface waves by offshore structures. A method to deduce local wave spectra from measured Doppler velocities of the sea surface.
