  • Abstract
In the field of large workpiece production, such as railway or ship manufacturing, the quality of a welded workpiece is determined by two main entities: the strength of the individual seam; and the spatial accuracy of the assembled part. A common technology for detecting global and local deformations is measuring the right angle distance between the workpiece and a reference plane. This paper introduces a newly developed sensor system which measures the complete envelope curve of a workpiece based on a rotating laser beam and a light sensitive receiver. A short overview of the measurement principle and the signal processing realised as well as the application of the sensor in the field of railway production are presented
