Abstract
The application of controllable shunt compensation by the fast-acting transformer type controllable shunt reactors (CSR) is considered for improving the properties of capacitor compensated transmission lines by giving the example of Brazilian North-South 500 kV Interconnection. The reactive power consumed by CSRs in any operation condition is coordinated with the power flow through the line and voltage drop across the capacitors. The transfer capability is limited only by permissible current through the conductors and capacitors. The investigations carried out completely confirm this statement. The type of AC transmission system proposed is strongly recommended to use as a reliable interconnection between the distant power systems.
