Abstract :
We study a multilevel modulation scheme using QAM-signalling. The multistage suboptimal receiver for the Gaussian channel is considered, in which the metrics are calculated from the nearest points of the corresponding signal subsets. The rigorous upper bounds on decoding error probabilities are functions of the Chernoff bounding parameter, for which an expression is calculated for 4-QAM and for QAM with an infinite number of signal points
