Abstract :
The purpose of the present work is to improve the basic understanding of vortex induced vibrations of marine risers in a sheared current. More than one vortex shedding frequency will be seen along the riser, and interaction between frequencies is of particular interest. A new type of experiment with a circular cylinder supported by springs is described. The model is designed to identify damping and excitation for cases with more than one active frequency. Some results from the experiments are presented, and a discussion on how these results can be applied in a theoretical model for prediction of vortex induced vibrations is given
