Abstract
An adaptive resource management scheme for LEO satellite networks supporting multiple classes of multimedia traffic with different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements is proposed in this paper. The key ingredient in this scheme is a novel reserved bandwidth sharing strategy that contributes to achieving high bandwidth utilization by exploiting the dynamic characteristic of reserved bandwidth. Based on a companion bandwidth adaption algorithm, the proposed scheme allocates bandwidth to a connection in the cell where the connection request originates and reserves bandwidth adaptively in the potential destination cell according to two current monitored system parameters of the destination cell, connection dropping probability (CDP) and reserved bandwidth ratio (RBR). Simulation results show that in the non-uniform multimedia traffic pattern the proposed scheme can greatly reduce CDP and offer satisfactory connection blocking probability (CBP), while maintaining bandwidth utilization high.
