Abstract :
Synchronous optical network (SONET) management modeling is discussed from an organizational aspect, in accordance with a framework of OSI (open systems interconnection) system management. In view of network operation and SONET layering scheme, the SONET management environment is partitioned into three generic management domains: administration, logical link, and network element domains. A logical link domain is further divided into path, line, and section subdomains. The relation between individual domains is specified with an object-oriented approach. Based on the domain organization, a hybrid management structure is proposed to include both centralized and distributed operations. The keys to realization of an end-to-end management in this hybrid management environment are agent, supervisor, and interdomain management processes. The proposed architecture model provides the capabilities of end-to-end management under a multivendor environment and with flexibility of management systems. Operational examples of provisioning and alarm surveillance functions are shown
