Abstract :
An all-digital 622-Mb/s SONET-like ATV (advanced television) codec and transport system was demonstrated over 42 km of optical fiber. This system uses a 4:1:1 sampling scheme and removal of the sync in the transmitter portion of the codec to fit the signal into a 622-Mb/s bandwidth. The codec and transmission link are picture format independent, and ATV signals, with all existing as well as anticipated formats, can be transported. Before transmission, the digitized signal was organized into four 155-Mb/s channels to which the SONET (synchronous optical network) framer functions as well as audio and other data were added. These channels were byte interleaved together to form a serial 622-Mb/s SONET-like data stream. This data stream was sent over 42 km of single-mode optical fiber using a low-cost optical transmitter and receiver developed for subscriber loop applications. An error rate of under 10-11 was achieved at this distance
