  • Abstract
Personal communication networks are expected to bring the biggest change to the way people interact since the widespread adoption of the telephone. This paper proposes an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) air-interface for wireless multimedia communications using direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA). Bit error rate for DS-CDMA is derived in a log-normal shadowed Rayleigh fading channel. A new concept of dividing ATM cells into fragments is introduced. To achieve required levels for bit error rate and cell delay a two-level automatic repeat request (ARQ) scheme is used. The proposed solution is easy to implement and is ideal for carrying different kinds of traffic at the same time, as is expected from a multimedia environment
