Abstract
High quality compression of video content can greatly enhance the bandwidth utilization over scarce resource networks. This paper discusses a system that optimizes the MPEG2 encoder by using a multicore processor (cell broadband engine). MPEG video compression is quite difficult to achieve in real time. The hardware solutions proposed for this problem are expensive besides being obsolete. Also, the use of a distributed environment and multiprocessing system give problems such as communication overhead. The paper presents a portable, fault-tolerant, parallelized software implementation of the MPEG2 encoder. The use of a platform like multicore processor aids in the implementation of parallel multimedia applications, such as the encoder. The encoder is expected to perform better than various encoders available today. Also, our encoder does not require available network processing resources during execution.
