Abstract :
The distribution of cardiac transmembrane potential during extracellular point stimulation reveals complex patterns of activation that cannot be explained by traditional cable theory. Simultaneous regions of depolarization and hyperpolarization exist surrounding the stimulating electrode. Epifluorescence images of cathodal stimulation in rabbit myocardium are presented here. Activation occurs from the site of depolarization called the virtual cathode
