Abstract :
Adaptive signaling policies are developed that increase the utilization of the signaling channel without the requisite decrease in the data channel capacity. The increased responsiveness of a packet radio network obtained using the adaptive signaling policies is examined as an example. Improved network responsiveness was obtained for those networks where the signaling channel cycle length must be set to accommodate the maximum number of users but in typical deployments fewer than the maximum may actually participate. The effectiveness of these policies at increasing responsiveness without a corresponding decrease in data capacity is demonstrated numerically
