Abstract :
Performance limits of signal processing in optical domain are discussed. Specialized functions applicable to transmission link are identified and quantified. Hybrid construction of photonics/electronics processing devices used in analog-to-digital conversion, signal replication, penalty mitigation and switching are described and illustrated in practical examples.
