Abstract
The observability problem is studied for a general class of naturally occurring systems that contain both differential and algebraic equations. It is shown that there are three types of observability: observability of the effective initial state, observability of the complete initial state, and observability of the state trajectory. Each of these properties is examined from a geometric point of view
