Abstract :
The performance of trellis-coded 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation signaling transmitted through a nonlinear regenerative satellite channel is studied. The bandlimited signal is distorted by a nonlinear high-power amplifier which introduces AM-AM and AM-PM conversions. Bit error rates are computed for coded 16-ary QAM and uncoded 8-ary phase-shift-keying transmissions in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise. A simple 4-state rate-3/4 convolutional encoder is assumed, and it is shown that the coded 16-ary QAM signal has about 3-dB coding gain over an uncoded 8-ary PSK signal having the same spectral efficiency, and about 8 dB over uncoded 16-ary QAM at the expense of some spectral efficiency
