Abstract
This paper presents the line surge arrester and its principle, as well as the modeling of 10 kV transmission lines including line surge arresters. Cases with different numbers of arresters are simulated and analyzed by the electromagnetic transient program PSCAD/EMTDC. Simulation results show that installing line surge arresters can evidently reduce the surge current and overvoltage in the lines. It is an economical and effective way to reconstruct the lightning-prone sections and phases of the 10 kV lines with proper numbers of line surge arresters.
