  • Abstract
    This paper presents the design of linear robust decentralized fixed-structure power system damping controllers using genetic algorithms (GA). A classical control structure consisting of a gain, a wash-out stage and two lead-lag stages is assumed. The GA searches for an optimum solution over the controller parameter space. Controller robustness is taken into account as the controller optimization is performed for various system operating conditions. A true decentralized control design is achieved as the loop control channels are closed simultaneously. The approach is used to design static VAR compensator (SVC) and thyristor-controlled series compensator (TCSC) damping controllers to enhance the damping of two inter-area modes in a small power system
